Sergeant First Class (SFC) John Paul Karpovich to Keynote Veterans Day Ceremony

A Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at the Wilkes-Barre Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and conducted by the Korean War Veterans Association of Wyoming Valley, on Wednesday, November 10th, at 1:00 p.m., in the Main Lobby of the Medical Center.

The keynote speaker for the program will be Sergeant First Class (SFC) John Paul Karpovich.  He joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in February 1994 during his junior year of high school at Hanover Area and entered the service under the Split-Option Training Program.  During his service as a part-time member of the National Guard, he never turned down an opportunity to train.  Karpovich was a member of the PA National Guard Biathlon Team and attended three war fighter exercises in Germany.  In January of 2000, he was hired as a National Guard Recruiter, and then returned to his former unit as a Training Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in 2002.  A few years later he served as a Unit Readiness NCO at the Kingston Armory.  In August 2007, he was promoted to Sergeant First Class and assigned as Battalion Senior Personnel Services Sergeant for the 109th Field Artillery.

Karpovich’s awards include the Soldiers Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, two National Defense Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer’s  Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, three Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbons, the Pennsylvania Cross for Valor, two Pennsylvania Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Medals, three Pennsylvania Service Medals, the General Thomas R. White Medal; and the General  Thomas. J. Stewart Medal.

SFC Karpovich is a member of Black Diamond American Legion Post 395 and a life member of AMVETS Post 59 in Hanover Township.  He serves on the Board of Directors of NortheastPA Veterans MultiCare Alliance. He has been married to his wife, Tavelynn for eight years and they have two children, Georgia and Hailey.
